NYPD Commissioner tries to ease fears of pro-immigrant crowd at packed Bronx church

THE BRONX –– More than 600 people from South Bronx churches packed Immaculate Conception Church with one goal in mind: to ask the police commissioner to make sure this community of immigrants is safe for everyone, regardless of immigration status. "I am the grandson of immigrants," NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill told the crowd. "I understand diversity. We are a majority minority police department. That's what it takes to keep this city safe."

Need for major renovations keeps NYCHA units vacant for years: audit

Almost 300,000 New Yorkers are on the waiting list for a spot inside a New York City Housing Authority Building yet hundreds of apartments remain vacant, some for more than 10 years. But NYCHA says vacancy rates are the lowest in a decade and that it can’t make the necessary repairs without the necessary funding.
